Everyday Feminism

Before you read this post be sure to check your Twitter feed..... Alright, now that you've returned and have noticed the thousands of post featuring the hashtag " Happy International Women's Day",  I have a bit to say. Before I get any complaints just hear me out, I am in no way opposing the concept of Women's History Month or International Women's Day, but I do feel that it is necessary to celebrate and take pride in our history everyday. If we have to start with one day and one month for our male counterparts to appreciate us women then we are making progress, but I won't settle for just this.
I think my issue stems from the fact that we haven't reached equality yet. If we were considered to be complete equals to males and this day or this month was used to remind everyone of what women have been through, then I don't think we would then be able to use today as an excuse for any other act of the past.

The Pros:
1. We are finally addressing the strife that women have faced in the past and are currently facing.
2. We recognize that women do deserve something (equality just in case your forgot : ) )

The Cons:
1. People get too caught up on being perfect for one day. If someone uses a derogatory term for a woman on this day, then it becomes " How could you dare say something like this on a day to celebrate women?" rather than approaching these issues everyday. Don't act as if it is the first time someone has used that term; call them out on it everyday if you truly celebrate women.
2. People feel that NOT using any derogatory terms this month invalidates their daily actions of disrespect. "Well, I didn't disrespect any women this month so that's fine, I gave them their time to shine"-- NO,  I deserve much more than a month; I deserve a lifetime, as does any other woman.
For some, it is only during this month that we discuss the tribulations that women went through. Don't just celebrate March. It is each and everyday that women are faced with yet another set back, but if this month and day is where we have to begin, than so be it! Let us take advantage of this month, of this day, so that we can educate and let it be known that Susan B. Anthony, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Gloria Steinman, Malala Yousafzai, and so many others did not  fight in vain. I'll celebrate women everyday, every month, every year (including leap year) because those feminists before me worked too hard to break through bars of misogyny for me to fall back into its traps. I am a proud FEMINIST and I'll let it be Internationally known every day!!!
I'll be satisfied when I can celebrate equality. I dream of equality but I'm putting an end to that dream and turning it into reality; "Meninism" doesn't stand a chance! Let me know your thoughts on this I am very interested!!

P.S. For those that don't know, take this month to find out what feminism is so that you can use it to the best of your ability : )

Reaching a New Level

I would be lying if I said that I wasn't scared, but a year ago I wouldn't have dared to even press create on this blog, so I guess I'm making progress. Scared of what exactly?.....Well to be honest, I don't know. Maybe I was afraid that I would be waiting for a spark of creativity to casually grace my mind and trickle down to the keyboard where it would leave a trail of unspoken words that I just couldn't wait to share. But what I failed to realize at the time was that each and every day I was able to address the world with the power of my words and that was something that no one could take away. Creativity isn't acquired.

Now about this blogging thing, it's a bit different for me. I think that the atmosphere is starting to grow on me. I'm sure that it will take some getting used to, but I don't mind this sense of freedom for the world to agree with or disagree ( this is a judgement free zone) with what I'VE got to say, and I'll always be proud of that! I've been contemplating for some time now on whether or not I should start blogging, but when I was sitting home one day and my mind began to clog with ideas I just couldn't let that go to waste.

So, here I am!! My name is Aleah and I love to write, search, and discover; so that's what I'll be doing and I'm excited for you to join me.

I've also created a YouTube channel: My Equation For Success that will feature spoken word and oratory pieces that I've done, as well as a series of discussion with friends, peers, and acquaintances about issues that have been of my concern.

I'm here to learn from my mistakes, teach what I can, and create recognition of the things that we too often ignore.

I always say that words have the power to break or build, so be mindful of which you are doing.
